Education: Our Best Chance Against Climate Change
Sign up for the upcoming Seed & Grain Experience here and learn how you can play a part in this important movement!
Our latest video truly captures the essence and motivation for our Seed School programs. Created by former Grain School student and RMSA videographer Oakley Moore-Anderson of Little Sure Shot Films, Oakley's work brilliantly captures the essence of RMSA's programs. Special thanks to the Kalliopeia Foundation for underwriting these video efforts.
Please follow our YouTube channel – We will be adding educational videos as we move forward.
The Seed & Grain Experience is an immersive experience both physically, spiritually and intellectually. We will spend a week soaking in the healing hot springs and deepening our knowledge of seeds and grains. Space is limited for this event so register at your earliest convenience. Join us May 3rd through the 8th in Buhl, Idaho and choose either an educational focus on seed saving or heritage grain growing. (Although both tracks will be covered throughout.)
Across the street from the classroom and next to the Snake River, are RMSA’s grain trial plots with examples of various strategies for grain production and demonstrations of how to scale up production. Adjacent to the Owls Nest is a geothermal greenhouse operation providing ample produce for a bioregional CSA and our week-long training.

People of the Pinch
For many years our Executive Director Bill McDorman has been referring to the folks who make up the seed movement as "people of the pinch" (representing the pinch point in which we find ourselves regarding biodiversity and lack of seed sovereignty). This phrase has been adopted by many seed educators (like Sefra Alexandra, shown in the image to the right).
A 2019 Seed School graduate, Ashley Fine, was so inspired by her education that she created this poem entitled, "People of the Pinch." Ashley's elegant, impactful prose stirs the soul. Her intentional, powerful words relate a harmonious past to a dire present, yet still instilling hope for what is to come.
Belle Starr had the opportunity and platform to speak these moving words to a Arcosanti Convergence Festival audience last fall. Thank you to Lucas Mullikin and Sean-Paul von Ancken for the video - please click on the image above to view it on our YouTube site.
Read Ashley's full poem on our website here and feel the passion, love, and empowerment for our positive culture.
Last November, RMSA was extremely fortunate and grateful to be able to join the 8th Session of the Governing Body, International Treaty Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, in Rome, Italy. You can find more info on the session here.
Back to the Future with Heritage Grains
This weekend our Director BIll McDorman and Program Director Lee-Ann Hill will be presenting at the 2020 New Mexico Organic Farming Conference next month. This event is an annual opportunity for farmers, ranchers, and researchers from around the Southwest to share their experiences and expertise.
Bill will be sharing his expertise on Seed Patenting and Lee-Ann will be presenting about going “Back to the Future with Heritage Grains."

Five Valleys Seed Library
The Missoula Public Library has enjoyed a partnership with the Five Valleys Seed Library (FVSL) and looks forward to the continued growth of the seed library.
Next month, FVSL will be gathering at the Garden City Harvest's River Road Community Garden. Local seed saving educator, Dave Victor, will discuss beginning the seed saving journey and herbalist Elaine Sheff will share her knowledge of 'medicinal' weeds, with our very own Bill McDorman keynoting this event. FSVL will have plenty of seeds to give away and encourages the community to bring seeds to share at the event.
